HEARING DIAGNOSTICS
ABLB TEST
Specialized hearing assessment used to compare loudness perception between ears and identify cochlear recruitment associated with inner ear hearing loss.
What is an ABLB Test?
Alternate Binaural Loudness Balance (ABLB) Test is a specialized hearing test used to detect recruitment, an abnormal growth of loudness commonly associated with cochlear (inner ear) hearing loss. It compares how loud sounds are perceived between the better-hearing ear and the affected ear.
WHY ABLB TESTING IS IMPORTANT
Detects Cochlear Recruitment
Helps identify abnormal loudness growth associated with inner ear hearing loss.
Supports Differential Diagnosis
Assists in distinguishing cochlear hearing loss from retrocochlear disorders.
Improves Hearing Assessment
Provides valuable information about loudness perception in each ear.
Assists Treatment Planning
Helps guide hearing aid and rehabilitation recommendations.
HOW DOES THE ABLB TEST WORK?
Step 1
Tones are presented alternately to both ears through headphones.
Step 2
The intensity of sounds is adjusted until they are perceived as equally loud in both ears.
Step 3
The patient indicates when the loudness level seems balanced between the two ears.
Step 4
The audiologist analyzes loudness growth patterns to identify recruitment.
BENEFITS OF ABLB TESTING
Why ABLB Testing Matters
- Detects cochlear recruitment accurately
- Supports differential diagnosis of hearing loss
- Assists hearing aid fitting and programming
- Complements other audiological evaluations
- Non-invasive and painless procedure
- Improves diagnostic accuracy
